The species is endemic to the southern part of Korup National Park in Cameroon. There was no additional external funding received for this study. The specimen was thought to belong to the genus In a new study, researchers from the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, in the U.K., and the University of Yaounde I in Cameroon, have formally described the Ujor specimen as a new species — one that’s either critically endangered, or already possibly extinct.Repeated efforts to search for the tree from 2000 to 2004 failed to rediscover the Ujor species, and the researchers believe the species is likely critically endangered. The tree species Berlinia korupensis Mackinder & Burgt is described as new.

Nearly 70 years ago, Edwin Ujor of the Nigerian Forestry Service collected a specimen of a tree from a forest high up in the Bamenda highlands in Cameroon. Fourteen 0.2–1.1 ha mixed species plantations consisting of single-species 15 × 15 m blocks were studied for 5 years in a logging concession of southeastern Cameroon. 2018 Jun 26;13(6):e0199324. Background: Although many new species to science have been discovered from thousands of specimens resulting from botanical inventories to support conservation management in Cameroon in recent years, additional species remain to be formally evaluated taxonomically and described.
