GLD is more difficult to get into because it also passports you to every Civil Service job at that grade - if you get bored of GLD or lawyering you have scope to move across and up.
The Judiciary. I'm genuinely looking forward to it, tbh. Also,a lot of people were recruited when the job adverts had a salary band on it (50-67k ish from memory for g7s and 62-72 for g6s). In addition HMT salaries are the lowest in the departmental civil servant. I'm a legal purist at heart and so I find that aspect quite appealing. You will have a great timeIt wouldn't surprise me. Amidst pump and pageantry today the office of the Head of Civil Service, (OHCS) endorsed … Quite frankly, if he/she needed a second job, it is because he/she was living beyond their means. You can probably drive a bus and with a bit of overtime earn nearly 40k a year without all the hassle and bs of being a lawyer.Heh like driving a bus in London, plus overtime driving a bus in London isn't stressful. It's probably a lot more stressful than being a GLS lawyer fgs Funny old world isnt it, the train driver delivering all the civil service lawyers from out in the shires to the office in central earns more than them. You will have a great time.I suspect the more likely scenario is you'll end up with 150 files in immigration without a clue what to do and your home office clients speaking to you like you're a bit of dirt. it's very likely another ten years of austerity awaits for all those in the public sector. C2. Diversity: My experience of GLD is that it is not very socio-economically diverse. The hours were often 8.30-10/11. Civil service pay isn't fabulous, but I'd rather work reasonable hours and have a varied life. Grade. I'm a legal purist at heart and so I find that aspect quite appealing. Salary. The national average salary for a Head of Service Management is £70,886 in United Kingdom. if the gld was the only bid you got them fair enough, but it's a very very depressing place to work at the moment, morale is very low, and the money is very bad (check the latest Glassdoor reviews) and its probably going to get a lot worse in the next few years.Good luck with it anyway. If it wasn't for the final salary pension how many civil service bods would jack it all in?Having said that, I think working for the CS would be ace. This was the recent review which was entitled ' I've wasted the best years of my life here':1. The opportunity to work on legislation appealed to me, too. pancakes 28 Aug 20 16:13. Grade 6. The national average salary for a Head of Service Management is £70,886 in United Kingdom. Sir Mark Sedwill. Do you know what people like you are earning? Other. They have said they recognise the pay issues and that they will do something about it.Quite how our new trainee is going to buy a house for his family and pay for child care on the gld G6/g7 salary I do not know- hopefully they are already on the property ladder or have a rich partner. And I don't know what teams the other contributors have worked in but I've worked in 4 different teams over the years and with the exception of one, most people used to get to the office at 0930 and leave between 6-7, so the hours and work life balance aren't even that great. To be fair, it is false advertising to advertise an external vacancy with a salary band like that. The annual Civil Service People Survey [6] asks whether civil servants are satisfied with the pay and benefits they receive. They will start you on the bottom of the band and you will stay there until you get promoted. I know of a fair few people (including my friend at the SFO as a g7) who came from private practice to the gls, and negotiated a much higher salary than advertised - in their case they are a g7 on 80k.Unfortunately for our trainee he can go and work in the commercial team when they are qualified but as has been said, it'll be a level transfer on the existing salary and terms and there they will stay on the minima, whilst the person sitting next to them might well be on 60/70 grand. An LO isn't a Grade 7. Summary. You need to be wealthy to work here as those paying rent/mortgages simply won't be able to afford to make ends meet. It was not glamorous, but it allowed me to look after my son during the day and earn an hourly wage during the nights and on weekends.
