It was shelved with YA in my library. As a parent to a ten year old, and a fifteen year old, I would say any age after about 12 feels appropriate to me. This is absolutely one of the most beautiful things I own. How do I not already own this?Barry does it again! As inspiration, it's tops. THE ORDINARY IS EXTRAORDINARY. This is true of their argumentative writing as well as their personal writing. It is a journal that has been compiled with an audience in mind and with well-crafted pages in which the image often corresponds with the words, such a"What It Is" by Lynda Barry is part journal, scrapbook, sketchpad, self-help book, memoir, and writing exercise book, so I find it rather limiting to think of it as solely a journal. The second half of the book What It Is by Lynda Barry is a fascinating memoir/scrapbook/writing guide that almost defies definition. I think the main problem is that grand, sweeping generalities SOUND more academic and grown up to them, so by using that kind of writing they actually are doing their best to mimic academic writing (which in itself should make us worry about the kinds oSomething I've been thinking about is how to get students to be more concrete, to put objects and people into their writing, instead of always relying on generalities. This slowed me down, but perhaps this may have been the author's intent. Is there something obnoxious about that feeling of exquisite particularity that pours over you like you are a delicious warm salty chicken and it a gravy silken and restorative when someone whose the whole stem to stern nature and beingness of their lovely odd imperfect striving gorgeous difficult self seems designed to cradle bolster reflect and calm your own? Barry got her start around 1979, satirizing relationships and other social issues with acute observation and hilarious delivery. Everybody. As an intellectual rhapsody of the power of image, form, and function within writing, What It Is is unlike any book I’ve ever experienced: undeniably an oddity– although wonderfully so. People who like to read & people who want to write.Great book! Students' first response is usually quite wild: look at my textbook! By the end, it’s likely to become a permanent habit.Keeping a journal every day was hard for me. I read this because Austin Kleon talks about Barry a lot, and I can see why. It also is very wise, and I feel like kissing Ms. Barry's feet for gifting the world with it. She seems to be the embodiment of "Keep Going."
