Chris Paine's documentary about General Motors' development and withdrawal of the innovative, environment-friendly EV1 automobile is bound to reverberate with anyone who's fallen in love with a product only to see it irrevocably yanked from the market. The filmmakers did a good job of pointing out the shortcomings of other "new" technologies but they never discussed the limitations of hybrids or electric cars. Without one drop of gas. This fascinating feature-length documentary tells the shameful story of how fast, economical electric cars became a hit in California in the 1990s, then vanished almost overnight.
A pretty decent well put together documentary that really informed me of something that I knew of, but did not really know much about. Transcends its own awful construction by being a documentary, further supporting the idea that docs needn't be well made to be worthwhile. Everyone says what a wonderful idea the electric car would have been had it made it to market and become mainstream, and these same people are forever saying how clean it would have ran, and it is this part that bothers me in that is is misleading. First of all, they asked themselves, in the long run are you going to make more money building small efficient vehicles or behemoths like the Hummer? Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Who Killed the Electric Car? Furthermore, the EV1 was built to comply with California law. That explanation just doesn't make sense. JeffS. Was this review helpful? Unlike the fuel cell, which is perpetually 10 years in the future. It was a very well-done film with a great message. All trying to draw a conclusion about why this clean, efficient, sleek yet affordable vehicle was pushed from the market in the midst of global warming and rising gasoline prices. Go see this film and you will gain a lot of insight into why we have an energy crises and perhaps why America is having so many problems.
