Based on the disappearance of green activist Juanita Nielsen in Sydney in 1975, it tells the story of a group of residents trying to protect their houses from demolition by a ruthless property developer who wants to build the grandiose `Eden project`. Heatwave belongs to a different era in Australian cinema, a time when we took a lot risks. When a womanizing bookshop owner hears about the suicide of his former girlfriend, he tries to find out more and meets her friend, a prostitute. Judy Davis (in one of her very first roles) creates a very compelling character, a lonely and driven personality that begs you to follow along in her obsession. These days, "Heatwave" is a pretty much totally forgotten film, but it's hard to see exactly why that is.

It was the second of two films inspired by this story that came out around this time, the first being The Killing of Angel Street (1981). I might have made the connections between the conspirators more certain, rather than implied.
