Timothy Leary Resources Manager at National Centers for Environmental Information Asheville, North Carolina Area 252 connections

The United States National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), headquartered in Asheville, North Carolina, is the world's largest active archive of environmental data. In 2015, NOAA merged its three major data centers, including NCDC in Asheville, to create NCEI as a way to meet a growing demand for environmental information. In 2015, NCDC merged with the National Geophysical Data Center and the National Oceanographic Data Center to become the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). To improve our ability to meet that demand, NOAA’s former three data centers—the National Climatic Data Center, the National Geophysical Data Center, and the National Oceanographic Data Center, which includes the National Coastal Data Development Center … The four World Centers (U.S., NCEI is archiving data from COSMIC-2, a constellation of six microsatellites that launched in June 2019. Through the Center for Weather and Climate and the Center for Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics, we provide over 25 petabytes of comprehensive atmospheric, coastal, oceanic, and geophysical data. This material provides links to websites created and maintained by other public and/or private organizations. We archive over 26 terabytes of data each month from over 130 observing platforms. We provide stewardship, products, and services for geophysical data from our Sun to Earth and Earth's sea floor and solid earth environment, including Earth observations from space. That same year, the NWRC changed its name to the National Climatic Center, ultimately becoming the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in 1982. President - Jared Rennie, CCM Jared is a research meteorologist at the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS), housed within NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) in Asheville, NC. Since then DeWayne has moved on to work alongside NOAA's NCEI and helped to establish a collaborative NASA DEVELOP node that is able to capitalize on both NOAA and NASA resources, including: diverse project mentors as well as access to, and knowledge of, datasets produced by both agencies.Since the summer of 2016 NASA DEVELOP at NCEI has interacted with a local climate service think tank called the Collider.
The presence of a link in this material is not a NASA endorsement of the site.

We’re announcing the release of the State of the Climate in 2019 report, an annual assessment of Earth’s climate system. NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) is responsible for preserving, monitoring, assessing, and providing public access to the Nation's treasure of geophysical data and information.

Starting as a tabulation unit in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1934, the climate records were transferred to Asheville in 1951, becoming named the National Weather Records Center (NWRC).

Through the Center for Weather and Climate and the Center for Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics, we provide over 25 petabytes of comprehensive atmospheric, coastal, oceanic, and geophysical data. The National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), formerly the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), located in Boulder, Colorado, is a part of the US Department of Commerce , National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration , National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service . In 2015, it was merged with the Nat… The NCDC was then housed at the Veach-Baley Federal Complex in downtown Asheville where it moved after the building's completion in 1995. The demand for high-value environmental data and information has dramatically increased in recent years. In 1951 the Federal Government consolidated millions of pages of archived weather data from across the country to Asheville for safekeeping.

The current director is Mary Wohlgemuth. NCEI provides customers with both production climate information and raw data from the climate archive. NCEI maintains one of the most significant archives on Earth, with comprehensive oceanic, atmospheric, and geophysical data. We are the Nation’s leading authority for environmental data, and manage one of the largest archives of atmospheric, coastal, geophysical, and oceanic research in the world. NCEI contributes to the NESDIS missionby developing new products and services that span the science disciplines and enable better data discovery. NCEI provides access to an extensive archive of environmental data through several platforms. As one of the nation's largest weather data centers, Asheville is home to NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and UNC Asheville's National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center (NEMAC), offering atmospheric science majors …
