Shortly after the death of Martin Luther King, The Last Poets were born. Nuriddin joined the first version of The Last Poets, with members Gylan Kain, David Nelson, and Felipe Luciano, but left before the trio recorded and released their only album, Right On, in 1967, the soundtrack to a documentary movie of the same name. They went through confrontations with the FBI and police, and were arrested for robbing the Ku Klux Klan and various other ventures with Revolution in mind. Following their get-together on May 19, 1968 (The remainder of the 1970s saw a decline in the group's popularity in America, although they became quite popular in Europe. During their late 1960s and early 1970s they connected with the violent factions of the SNCC (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee), the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society), and the Black Panther party. On May 16, 1969 -- Malcolm X 's birthday -- they officially formed the Last Poets, adopting the name from the work of South African Little Willie Copaseely, who declared the era to be the last age of poets before the complete takeover of guns. The three core members of The Last Poets – David Nelson, Gylan Kain and Abiodun Oyewole – came together in 1968.
