The book is quite a bit different from the film (which has virtues of its own - notably Liza Minnelli's heartbreaking performance); is it better? You will laugh you will cry . This is a very special movie, that transcends the period it was made to lament the underdog's painful journey through want and wish and heartbreaking compromise, all while the conventional world seems to go blithely on, unaware of the slings and arrow of outrageous fortune that befall those born not to have their places in the sun. I enjoyed every minute of reading this book. He is not the quiet, awkward, painfully shy co-ed who is bewildered by Pookie. John Nichols has done a masterful job of drawing two characters just coming into flower - emotionally needy, confused, exhilerated, excited, horny, discovering sex, questioning the sincerity of their feelings forYou can tell Holden Caufield to go home and stop bitching and moaning. The similarities between young adult relationships then and now are astounding.
Jerry is a typical college guy, though he wants to be more.
I enjoyed reading the erratic thoughts of the quirky protagonist, a strong female lead who is held back by social rules and oppression.
Tim wrote much of the sound track for Jeremiah Johnson and did the singing too . The director and producer was Alan J. Pakula, who had produced Pakula and his 65-member Paramount crew were on and around the Hill from Sept. 11 until Oct. 15, 1968. in a nasty, derisive, and withholding way. And then?
It should be very fast.[manic. in a nasty, derisive, and withholding way. Of course, the names have been changed to protect the – presumed – innocents. Almost stream of consciousness from an ADD writer. Being around a close friend who was diagnosed as a manic depressive, Pookie seemed to be having an ‘episode’. Nichols certainly can write, but spends too much time practicing not being able to write. The other horn is that I'm always afraid it will be a waste of time, there are so many books I have good reason to think I will like. Junie Moon's face has been disfigured by ill-gotten burns, and she depends on her wit and her friends, Warren and Arthur, to cope. The Sterile Cuckoo - Alternate Ending : Alternate Ending. Interdependent they dwell in a loft house and live on little thefts, until an aging minor criminal moves in with them and takes over the role of a father. She asks for help from her neighbor, Frank Athearn. Like we existed to be made into art. She clings to Jerry, a quiet, studious fellow who has the ability to choose to live in Pookie's private little world or be accepted by the society that she rejects. Perhaps, Pookie wanted someone to validate what she did or care enough to check and make sure she didn't go through with it (if her words were only a threat). Start by marking “The Sterile Cuckoo” as Want to Read: "Oh, man. Director.
The author gave us this energetic, creative , one-of-a-kind character, and he owed us better closure about her fate. What do you think? After finding stolen money she is victimized, making it necessary to find her support in her declining years. I liked the book as much as the movie.
I won't always, but the point is both having a reason to read a book and not having a reason to read a book are both attractive at times. It's always interesting to me to have become familiar with an author's work and then go back to read their first novel, as it was with Nichols' first work, the story of a likable college couple: Jerry and Pookie. Loved the movie, loved the book. So let's see how it goes.
It should be very fast.I've been casting about for something that really comes boffo out of the gate and grabs me and this did it. They rounded up about 125 Hamilton and Kirkland College students to use as extras and filmed largely on campus. Also the late Tim McIntyre son of wagon trains John McIntryre has a supporting role in this film .
Liza Minnelli won an Oscar nomination for this role, which was perfectly cast. The book was NOT better in this case! Having just read The Remains of the Day after seeing (and loving) the film adaptation first I thought I’d try another novel of a film I love, The Sterile Cuckoo. This was a very different ballgame. Stairwell scenes were shot in South Hall.Other key scenes were filmed at Oudin’s Court in Sylvan Beach (now Sunset Cottages) and the Union Chapel next door — which were added to the script on the spot because the chapel’s proximity to Pookie and Jerry’s love nest “seemed too good to be true.” Oddly, Hamilton’s Chapel went unused except for brief exterior shots. When Jerry looks out his window, he is at 3 College Hill Road, looking across the street at 20 College Hill Road, the “boarding house” where Pookie stays when visiting campus. It let you know rather early on that it was a depressing book, but let you ease into happiness quite a few times. Jerry’s residence hall is a composite, which is fairly obvious to the Hamilton student viewer. It does a good job of describing what falling in love, being in love, & breaking up are often like.
I know there were plenty of young people during John F. Kennedy years, who took their pursuit of a college degree very seriously, but in this short, quirky novel, most of the characters don’t seem to see higher educaBack in the early 1960s, the Love Generation had not quite arrived at American colleges and universities, but as this funky period piece proves, students were already pretty wild and kooky. He falls in love with the young widow Beth who has two children.
The novel shows their relationship from awkward first meeting, through the rush of that first infatuation, on to its whimpering demise. Splendid writing. It's always good to switch things up, though, and switch it up I did!Somehow I came across The Sterile Cuckoo, and it sounded intriguing enough between the sex and college love affair.
