I'm torn between loving and hating this novel, but generally when I feel that way about something it's because it was worth my time.
Very different from the movie. If it weren't for the engaging prose, I'm not sure I'd have given it 4 stars.
I did genuinely question for a while whether or not he had some soWouldn't normally read this type of book, as I tend to go for fantasy/scifi, but the first person narrative hooked me from the start. I would have given this a solid 3 stars, especially because I love British films and I love a good feline supporting actor -- this one's name was John. At that point, I could only muster halfhearted interest in the once very relate-able characters. I continued to the end, irritated by the obsessive sexual gymnastics, if only to find out whether the ladies in the support group were all going to turn out tI didn't enjoy this. As Dan's work/life balance spirals dangerously out of control, he's forced to break out of old habits and to dare to do something he has never had to do before - really care about someone other than himself. 3 of 8 people found this review helpful. Ethan Tell is a small time crook who makes a big-time score when he steals 1 million dollars. The ending was ridiculously unsatisfying, especially since, despite his almost sociopathic disengagement with the world, I quite liked the protagonist.
I found this to be an unsettling read, overall, but darkly hilarious. He takes with him a ginger tomcat he calls John and the telephone numbers of seven women his father wants him to contact.A slickly-written, bizarrely cold novel where the disaffected and disconnected protagonist struggles with his relationship with his estranged father and his job in a U.K. call centre.
A romantic comedy with a subversive yet uplifting message. I read this properly until page 200 or so & then tried alternate chapters, but couldn’t do it. John's carcass is basically discarded as though it were just an afterthought to be moved forward from, to race towards the end of the film.
