The flashback structure didn't work so well and was rather confusing at times. The film is based on The Passionate Friends: A Novel (1913) by H. G. Wells. Wells was one of his generation's great thinkers, and this is one of his best stories--snatch it up. The film was entered into the 1949 Cannes Film Festival. Ann Todd's character flaw is like an invisible crack in a Ming vase: you can't see it, but the value is immeasurably lowered, as she keeps trying to warn Howard, who cannot believe it: 'My love is not worth much,' she says, and he does not hear her. The middle-class family of a young woman cannot understand why she delays in marrying a respectable young man.

18 of 24 people found this review helpful. Cinemark Set in the wake of the 1916 Easter Rising, a married woman in a small Irish village has an affair with a troubled British officer. This film should really be shown to psychology students (that is, if they could stop studying rats and take an interest in humans). Polished acting, masterly direction and an excellent script put The Passionate Friends in the top rank of class British productions.

Three future directors worked on the film: Ronnie Neame as producer, Guy Green as Cinematographer, Clive Donner as an editor.
