There are some cliches of expression, but the skillful storytelling carriedSandi Tan's The Black Isle is a ripping read. She finally allows the mysterious caller who has been requesting an interview in order to "fill in the missing pieces of history" into her apartment and begins telling her story. This is a strange but intriguing story, and it's not always a pretty one. Her novel LURKERS is forthcoming from Soho Press in Spring 2021.Sandi Tan is a filmmaker (SHIRKERS) and novelist. This is one of those all-absorbing, sweeping sagas that draws the reader in right away and does not let go. The author has a talent for creating the scene and leading the reader through the characters life...Definitely not for the faint of heart but an interesting read for those who appreciate a very dark war story and truly horrific ghosts...Incredibly intense and somewhat difficult read but quite exciting. I didn't finish the book but 100 pages from the end of a 452 page book that hasn't shown a hint of what I signed up for. [even I knew HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ACCIDENT AND FOR HER MISCARRIAGE!The Black Isle caught my interest because of the setting of Asia during WWII and the promise of a good ghost story.
It is a highly colored version of Singapore, but its version—that the country is full of ghosts which it has subsequently tried to eradicate to its own detriment—is highly resonant. I did not quite fully understand the conclusion but it warrants some more thought and I am sure I will find the closure.
