Over the first few minutes, I was walking my daughter through the different sections of the shuttle and telling her about various shuttle facts and the memories I had about watching the many shuttle missions over the last three decades (please, no old man jokes).A magnificent view of the entire Space Shuttle Atlantis can be had on the main viewing floor with additional views above, below and all around her. We really loved the trip.
Cue, my best Hasselhoff impression!I had a thoroughly enjoyable day at the Kennedy Space Center; I recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in Space.Kennedy Space Center is in Florida. As it did, there was a massive Sonic Boom (this is caused when the sound barrier is broken! )My poor wee unsuspecting Gran was floating in the pool and got such a fright that she fell off her inflatable.Oh, how we laughed until we remembered she couldn’t swim. If I’d had more time, I’d definitely of had a second go!A really cool aspect of the day was the bus tour of the launch facilities (which took about forty-five minutes).The tour took us around the shuttle assembly building, an impressive building built for the Apollo missions. Jon McBride, the retired veteran who has been in space for 8 days, 5 hours and 23 minutes, took centre stage whilst wandering around the room. Review of: Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral We went because they re-opened due to Covid-19 and were excited because they required face masks to enter. It is truly one of the most awe inspiring sights I have seen and the sense of pride I felt was pretty overwhelming. On our way inside the Space Shuttle Atlantis building, we were in awe standing/walking under the 184-foot-tall replica of the space shuttle stack which includes the external tank and solid rocket boosters. The rocket garden is specifically impressive as were the tours. However it is worth shopping around as the ticket prices and packages vary, for ours we were able to get the VIP tour for the standard price which took us places you don’t get to seeon the standard tour.That’s interesting. The entire time while in the shuttle simulator, we actually all felt as if we were in an actual launch. Once we were vertically positioned, we counted down along with our launch clock and anticipated our space shuttle’s eight and a half minute ascent into orbit. I’ve (Craig) been interested in all things Universe related since my incredibly drunk uncle dragged me outside in my He-Man pyjamas to look at the stars and constellations, aged five. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see anything else given the amount of time needed to get through that exhibit. Since it takes a lot of research and exploration to find these family friendly places, I wanted to share my findings with others to make it easier for them to plan their next getaway. | Photo by FamilyVacationHubThe display of the Space Shuttle Atlantis allows guests to view her in almost any angle and is visible from three different floors above and below her. While the the regular KSC Bus Tour provided our family friends with plenty of information and stops around the Kennedy Space Center, our Up-Close Explore Tour offered us extra stops along the way and had a former NASA employee as our tour guide with an insiders knowledge.Our 2 hour bus tour included stops at the NASA Causeway for views of the launch pads, the Space Shuttle landing facility, the massive Vehicle Assembly Building, where the Saturn V rocket was assembled and where the Space Shuttle’s were mounted to their external fuel tanks, the Mobile Launcher Platform that sits atop a Crawler-Transporter as well as the famous countdown clock for the NASA launches.Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building, or VAB was used for the Saturn V rocket and Space Shuttle programs along with the four story Launch Control Center which supervised the launches. Review of: Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral it would be nice to advise as to what ti opened and closed before paying $10 to park and $60 per head entrance fee. Drinks included tea, coffee, and Tang of course… a favourite with the astronauts!Tang is the official astronaut drink consumed in the space station; it is basically sugary orange squash, which was a little too sweet for my palate but I am pleased to say that I’ve tried it.Buffet and Tang time over, Cpt. Shuttle, Kennedy Space Center. With the cargo doors wide open the Shuttle reminded me of a giant Ford Transit, basically just a giant delivery truck/work van with its small passenger cabin and large payload section, albeit a thoroughly impressive one.There was also a realistic (so I’m told) launch simulator, and because it was low season I went straight to the front of the line.Dancer! We finally found a parking place, a further out. Gemma writes, Craig looks good in the photos.I’m coming to yours for Christmas dinner for astronaut ice cream !!!!Amazing!
