I absolutely adored this insightful, enchanting book. She knocks the wind out of you with her straight talk, her child self's views on what's happening and the stark brutality of humanity.
Sadly, now, after reading this book, I am a little underwhelmed by it. I read it this time because I wanted to read it's sequel and felt like a brush-up of book one would certainly be in order.I've now read this book three times. Pantheon combined volumes 1 & 2 in boWhile the original French series was published in 4 volumes, the Pantheon English translation is only 2 volumes.
That is not the case here.

Now, having read the book, I shall have to go see the movie.I thought this book was very sad, I felt sorry how Marjane had to grow up. There’s a warmth and frankness to her way of turning a phrase or expressing an idea that is totally unique. Through film adaptations, her works and her account of late 20th century Iranian history have found even wider audiences, finding substantial critical and box office success worldwide. luckily i was introduced to irani art pretty early on, particularly cinema, so I've felt nothing but admiration for the culture, but this quick and clever graphic novel gave me a deeper look into something very close to who I am, as person who is barely ever represented in art, I appreciated my reflection being given such strength, as appose to the submissive helpless victim image that's always associated with saudi women.
