If this mechanic was dropped completely, it’s doubtful players would even notice. It may have too much going on, but Coimbra knows how to handle it well, even with a small misstep.
Coimbra introduces an innovative new dice mechanism in which the dice players draft each round are used in multiple different ways and have an impact on many aspects of their decision making. In the castle district, there are favor tiles that give various benefits as soon as they are claimed, such as gaining currency. Everything starts arranging itself into a logical robust structure laid out so well that the initial apprehension disappears completely. Everything you can think of scores points in Coimbra – it may be almost too much.
Players then gain end game victory points for each of the following items:• Lastly adding up guards, coins, and crowns divided by 2. Starting with the highest city space, players remove their dice in order according to the dice value (usually highest to lowest) and performs an action based on the location they are in. Lastly, some cards may have crowns that are gained when the card is purchased. Thank you for reading feel free to comment below. I’ll cover the meaning of each color later in this review.
Even if you don't get to do exactly what you planned because someone took the die or card you wanted, your action will prove useful. As for the rest of the game, the end scoring equally has many parts.
There is a little set-collection mechanic, where cards have different-coloured medals that earn points. It’s so nice, it makes me wonder why every game can’t come with something like it. The higher a player is on a track the better the benefits are. While not every aspect becomes immediately clear – you’ll still find yourself looking up a symbol or two in the rulebook on occasion – the rest of the game becomes almost intuitive. Follow me onand we can talk about gaming. The board looks great on the table and I’m impressed that it never feels cramped or messy even though there are so many parts to it. Taking a six will almost guarantee you an early pick during the purchasing phase for the card you The pilgrimage map is fun to try and strategize around. For example, taking a 6 valued die almost guarantees you’ll pick first during the purchase phase, but you’re going to have to pay 6 resources for that purchase.Once a player selects the die they want, they place it into one of their die holders to denote ownership, then they place it into one of the four different city spaces on the edge of the mainboard. There are two things to consider when drafting, the pip value on the die and the color itself. Coimbra is a game of choice, specialise or spread yourself out, number or colour, and so on. The value on the dice determines which player gets to pick up cards first, but also how much it will cost them. For example, one may give you extra currency every time you draft a card of a certain type, or another may give you end game victory points. Beautiful production, great turn-by-turn decision making, and it does have enough meat on the bone to return to many, many times. Having that as a reference immediately sets out the pace and gives players a clear structure, making the game fairly straightforward, despite its first appearances.
It feels tacked-on and completely unrelated to the rest of the game. These monasteries give bonuses to the players who manage to reach them with their meeple.
There is a lot to take in, but there is equally a lot to like. [Editors Note: The Board Game Mole is a content contributor for 181GAMING.

That six-value die may have the right number but it might also be purple – triggering pilgrim movement in the centre of the board – when, instead, the player needed a yellow die, which would earn them gold to spend on their next turn. There is definitely a lot to think about and, while it sounds convoluted, the visual assistance of the game really does a good job of holding the player’s hand every step of the way.
