They find Dustfinger on the road, who joins them on the way to Elinor's house. When seeing Capricorn, Fenoglio reveals Capricorn's past. Farid emerges from a story within The Thousand and One Nights, though we don't know which one. At arrival, they meet a guard named Basta, who seems to recognize Dustfinger. He follows Dustfinger into the night, walking behind him "like a second shadow" (58.39), and in doing so, continues to live on the outskirts of society—just like he did in the book he was read out of, and just like Basta. He persuaded her to read them into the world so that he could warn Dustfinger of the potential danger.
