Danny wants to promote new talent, like Joan Merrill (herself) or maid turned dancer Kitty Brown (played by Ann Miller). Unfortunately, however, it turned out to be as dull as ditchwater. It is also superior to their television versions with Shemp and Curly Joe. Time Out for Rhythm is a somewhat unusual musical, it that it has a fairly “heavy” plot, where Mike has a crush on Frances Lewis, a former Broadway singer who has just divorced her first husband. Drifting floozy Billie Nash gets a bar job where she seduces the owner's husband by convincing him to defraud his drunkard wife in order to elope together to Mexico but a sleazy neighbor with designs on Billie jeopardizes her plans. The development of television dates back to the 1920s, and the film recognizes that a broadcast variety show of this nature would be groundbreaking.Outside of this slight historical mention, “Time Out for Rhythm” is chockful of toe-tapping songs.One of the best numbers is a big band number, “Boogie Woogie Man” which is shot with shadows and glowing instruments to give a spooky illusion.Ann Miller also sings and tap dances to one of the best songs in the film, “A-Twiddlin’ My Thumbs.”“Time Out for Rhythm” is also a vehicle for singer, Joan Merrill.
